Ubuntu 16.04 LTS的LTS（ long term support）代表著會有10年的產品週期：
- 前五年：Stanadard support 標準支援。以16.04 LTS為例從2016年4月開始
- 約2.5年的Hardware and maintenance updates
- 約2.5年的maintenance updates
- 後五年：ESM（Extended Security Maintenance）擴展安全修補。從2021發布說Ubuntu 16.04 LTS會支援到2026年4月，剛好就是10年。
- 這段時間要拿到安全性更新，需要去Ubuntu Pro免費註冊一個帳號，透過這個帳號拿到token，使用此token才能繼續ESM。指令如下：
- sudo apt install ubuntu-advantage-tools -y
- sudo pro attach 從UbuntuPro拿到的token
- 建議上述兩個指令如果是遠端操作要在screen狀況下
平常說Ubuntu LTS版本有10的支援是不準確的，準確的講法應該是LTS版本有5年的支援，但可以使用到ESM達到10年的支援。可以到Ubuntu的Expended Security Maintenance頁面找到更多說明Ubuntu LTS與Ubuntu Pro差別的說明：
- Ubuntu LTS：提供5年約2,300 packages in Ubuntu Main repository。
- Ubuntu Pro：提供10年23,000 packages in Ubuntu Universe repository。要有ESM要用到Pro，會提供安全性更新（security updates）與high and critical CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures)。非企業的個人使用者可以免費用在5台機器上面
